“By being just fine with the rattlesnake, he gets a pass on the quiche.”.

This New York Times piece on Herman Cain is long, but well worth your time — not so much for what it says about Cain himself but for its insights into American political culture and the complexities of the Republican Party right now.  What does the author mean when he says “[B]y being just fine with the rattlesnake, he gets a pass on the quiche”?
